What if you injure your spine in a car crash?

Car crashes are a frequent occurrence on our roads. If you have one, knowing what to do could vastly affect its economic impact on you.

Spinal injuries can be some of the most devastating and life-changing injuries of all. Yet, each year, some of those who suffer a spinal injury in a crash do not get the full amount of compensation they need to cover the costs it will cause them.

Never assume it’s minor

Spinal injuries are not always apparent at first and can be easy to overlook. People sometimes get up and start walking about after damaging their spine, only for medical professionals to later tell them how close they were to ending up permanently paralyzed.

Getting prompt medical attention after a crash and following the orders of the team that attends you is crucial. They can stabilize your spine and do their best to prevent the body’s reaction to your initial injury causing you long-term problems. For instance, after fracturing a piece of your spine, which in itself might not be too much of an issue, the swelling the body produces in response could pressure the nerves and cause paralysis.

Never assume it will get better

You cannot cure a spinal injury, but you might be able to work on your ability to cope with it. A paralysis could be partial or complete, depending at which point of the spine the injury occurred. Any improvements you will make will require a lot of hard work and professional help.

Spinal injuries can limit your ability to work and do all those things you take for granted on a day-to-day basis. That can affect you and your family in a big way.

Legal guidance is always a good idea when injured in a car crash. It is even more crucial when you face an injury as serious as one to your spine could turn out to be.
