When it comes to drug crimes in Iowa, possession charges may be charged as felonies or misdemeanors. Misdemeanor possession is considered less serious and typically carries lower penalties upon conviction. Felony possession, on the other hand, usually results in sentences that are much more severe, with hefty fines and even the potential for a lengthy prison sentence.
A woman in Iowa was arrested and now finds herself in just such a situation; she is now facing criminal drug charges, one of which is a felony. According to police records, officers arrested the 45-year-old on a recent Monday. They were carrying out a search warrant of her home prior to taking the suspect into custody.
Police allege that they discovered both methamphetamine and marijuana on the premises, as well as related paraphernalia for each illicit substance. The woman now faces charges of two counts of misdemeanor possession for the drug paraphernalia, and an additional — though more serious — misdemeanor possession charge for the marijuana. Furthermore, she was charged with a 3rd offense possession of a controlled substance for the methamphetamine, which is considered a class D felony.
The woman was released after posting $5,000 bail the following day.
